Shine a light on the Arbor Company

The Arbor Company provides exceptional care to older adults who live in independent, assisted living, and memory care settings. They have communities in nine different locations across the Northeast and Southern states. The George Center is privileged to partner with The Arbor Company in their facilities across the Metro Atlanta area providing music therapy group services and intergenerational programming for residents in memory care as well assisted living portion of their facilities.

The Intergenerational Rock Band (IRB) is a joint project between The George Center and The Arbor Company Senior Living. It is a group that’s all about connecting and belonging. IRB reaches across the perceived barriers of generational divides to bring together a variety of individuals ranging in age from high schoolers, colligates, and young professional to geriatric populations. Based at assisted living facilities, IRB provides an opportunity for young and old individuals alike to interact in a fun and novel environment: a rock and roll band.

The group meets weekly to rehearse songs in preparation for a rock concert culminating a semester’s worth of hard work. All members are welcome regardless of musical ability or experience. Truly the only prerequisite is a spirit for adventure. Intergenerational Rock Band strives to increase socialization for residents, promote the needs of older adults in the community, and expose young adults to positive interactions with older generations.

Music therapy groups on the memory care units are full of great music from the 30s to the 60s, instruments, and voices singing the songs of years gone by. It is truly an honor to get to catch a glimpse of each resident’s life as memories are rekindled… Sometimes the memories are simple with a single word and sometimes memories are shared through a vibrant picture painted by their words from a poignant time in their life. Music therapy group services also incorporate physical health and wellness through movement to music. Music is a great motivator for exercise for people of all ages and helps them to continue to use their bodies in a purposeful and meaningful way.
