Meet the Staff: Shanna DeJoseph!
Featured on the blog this week as part of our “Meet the Staff” series is our ray of sunshine, Shanna DeJoseph! Shanna has been with us since February of 2016, and man oh man, we ADORE her. We asked her some questions so that YOU can get to know Shanna!
What is your role at GCMT?
I am one of the Music Therapists on board!
What has been your favorite experience so far at GCMT?
I love seeing progress, learning, and growth that happens with the clients that we serve.
Where did you go to school?
I attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where I majored in Music Therapy and Clarinet Performance. I did my clinical internship at Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, Florida. It was an adventure to move to Northern Florida- I was not used to black-eyed peas and having alligators live in the lake by my house!
Where were you before GCMT?
I lived in Richmond, Virginia for four years following college working in a Behavioral Health Hospital. There, I worked in acute and long-term psychiatric care for adolescents, adults, and active duty military members.
What is your favorite band and favorite song?
I have many favorite bands! These include City and Color, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, and Swear and Shake. However, I absolutely adore country music. I might not look like it at first glance but I would rather be line dancing to country music over just about any other activity! My all-time favorite song is “Someone to Watch Over Me” by Ella Fitzgerald.
What do you like to do for fun?
What DON’T I like to do for fun???? I love to read and write extensively in my journal on a daily basis. I am an artist and love to draw. I love to go for walks and find flowers and hidden beautiful places. I love to watch waterfalls. I love to dance and hang out with my friends in any capacity. I love to ride horses and go for trail rides. I love climbing mountains, camping, hiking, and backpacking. I love to watch the sun rise and the sun set. I love to run extensively long distances. I love training for races and competing against myself. I have seen every episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S several times. I ADORE swimming. I enjoy fishing, jet skiing, and boating. I love to explore new places and visit places that I know I already love. I love to make up cheesy quotes and words of wisdom. I love watching college football in the fall- Go Ohio State!!
What is your favorite food?
Peanut Butter. There is no more perfect food on the planet…. even though some people would argue that it is not a food.
What has been your favorite place to travel?
That is a tough one! I would say it is a toss-up between Oregon and Jamaica. My older brother lives in Oregon and it is absolutely stunning, and I went to Jamaica on a music therapy service trip. In Jamaica I was able to work with children and older adults living in Negril. I was also able to jump off a cliff and ride a horse on the beach which were both on my bucket list!
What do you think is your best quality?
I think my best quality is my enormous capacity for joy and exuberance. Oftentimes, I am experiencing massive endorphin rushes from running, which contributes to my happiness and excitability. I have been given a gift of being able to see beauty in the world around us, and that also brings me great joy and in turn I get to share that with people.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment thus far is completing a half-iron distance triathlon. This includes swimming for a mile, biking 56 miles, and then running 13.1 miles. I loved training for this race with several friends and experiencing what it is like to reach your absolute threshold physically. One of my favorite life mottos is that you are never sure of what you are capable of until you try. I love the discipline it takes to train for a race like that and how it trickles down to every other facet of life. It was an extremely difficult, cold, wet, and rainy race, and I wanted to quit several times, but I didn’t, and I finished well! I have also completed two marathons, several half-marathons, and many other shorter races.
What is your favorite thing about GCMT?
I love walking down the halls and constantly hearing music and laughter from clients and co-workers! We all bring different strengths and backgrounds to the table and that makes for a very well-rounded team.
